Celebrating our African Nova Scotian Youth Fellows

An inaugural program with deep roots

On June 30, 2026, we launched an exciting brand new youth program to build ties between our youth and our local government. We know that leadership development begins with access, relationships, and meaningful experiences. Over the next 8 weeks, our seven fellows, Aisha Smith, Chelsey Thomas, Jonah Oliver, Kaisen MacKinnon, Kali Williams, Paul Andre Ash, and Trondez Sparks, will work alongside the mayor, members of the Halifax Regional Council, and senior municipal staff, developing a deeper understanding of how decisions are made and how public policy can create lasting impact.

Halifax is at an inflection point, and the leaders who shape its future should reflect the people who live here. This fellowship gives African Nova Scotian youth the experience, mentorship, and access to municipal decision-making they need to step into those roles, while also creating space for municipal leaders to learn from the lived expertise and ideas of youth.” — Mohammed Hashim, CEO, Canadian Race Relations Foundation

Funder and partners acknowledgement

We’re grateful to the leadership of HRM Councilor Virginia Hinch, and Managing Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Tracey Jones-Grant, for their vision and expertise, and the support of our funder the Canadian Race Relations Foundation for helping to breathe life into this inaugural program. We also acknowledge the Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute’s very own CEO, Sylvia Parris-Drummond, for her commitment.

What does the Youth Fellowship opportunity look like?

These seven selected students, selected among dozens of candidates, are deeply passionate about community, leadership, and civic engagement. During the paid 8-week fellowship, they’ll receive hands-on experience in municipal government, mentorship, professional development, and advocacy.
