The Delmore Buddy Daye Learning Institute (DBDLI) is pleased to announce the second Ancestral Roots™ Awards: Recognizing Young Adult Leaders. This ceremonial event recognizes young, up and coming, community-centered leaders of African ancestry who are helping to shape and positively influence their respective communities.

The Ancestral Roots™ Awards pay tribute to under-acknowledged, yet exceptional, young adult leaders of African ancestry to help drive continued growth within our African Nova Scotian Communities.

How to Nominate a Member of Your Community

All nominations must include a one to two-page detailed letter (min. 500 words), attached to the nomination form, describing the accomplishments of the nominee. It is important to use specific and concrete examples that illustrate why the nominee is deserving of recognition. (e.g. who has benefited from the work of the nominee and how has the nominee positively influenced their community?) In addition to the nomination form and detailed letter, nominators must include a letter of endorsement from a non-related community leader and/or organization. You’re welcome to send an example of the nominees work for this category for further validation.

Nominees Must:

  • Be between and including the ages of 19 to 30.
  • Self-identify as a person of African ancestry.

  • Have historical and/or current connections to one of the 54 African Nova Scotian communities.

  • Have contributed and/or contributing directly or indirectly to the growth of their community through the means of the category for which they are being nominated.
