The DBDLI is is seeking submissions of your poems, short stories, essays, photographs, and images of art that speak to the theme of UBUNTU (I am because we are).

Please include a brief biography of 100 words maximum along with your submission(s). Writers and artists selected for the publication will receive an honorarium for their contribution.

Deadline: October 15, 2021

Submissions and questions can be sent to: AfricentricPublishing@dbdli.ca

In short, Ubuntu means, I am because we are. Ubuntu is about community, oneness, and togetherness. Take a look at this brief video clip of Bishop Desmond Tutu explaining Ubuntu:

While multiple submissions from one individual will be accepted for review, we ask that you limit the number of submissions to a maximum of five.

Visual art includes, but is not limited to, sculptures, textiles, digital illustrations, graphic designs, photography, and paintings.

If you are submitting images of art, please take clear photographs for review.

All those who have submitted pieces for consideration will hear back from the review committee by November 5, 2021.

Your submissions should be sent via email to AfricentricPublishing@dbdli.ca.

You should send only one email with the following attachments:

  1. A brief biography of 100 words maximum
  2.  A maximum of five works of writing or art

We ask that, when submitting more than one work for consideration, you attach each work to the same email as a separate document. Meaning, if you wish to submit the maximum of five works, your submission email should contain six documents: your biography and five documents of works.

You may divide your submissions between two emails if necessary, or you may reach out to our team at AfricentricPublishing@dbdli.ca for an alternate file transfer option.

Writers and artists will retain copyright to their work, with the understanding that those whose work is selected for the publication will give the DBDLI permission to publish their work in paper and digital forms as part of the collection, and its later editions.

We ask that you wait for our reply on November 15th, 2021 before submitting the same work elsewhere. This will avoid complications if another publisher wants exclusive copyright to the work.

You can submit works that have been previously published if you have retained copyright to the work. In such cases, please indicate in your submission that the work has been previously published, when, and by whom.

Those selected will receive a $150 honorarium along with five complimentary copies of the published work.

Our target date for publication is early Winter 2022.

Though not required, you may include a paragraph explaining the connection between your work and the publication theme, Ubuntu. No other documents will be considered nor should be included with submissions.
