Are you wondering how you can better support Black learners in the P to 12 system? The DBDLI-ILA Academic Coaches training project is a response to support African Nova Scotian (ANS) students who have had their school year interrupted by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Evidence points to the need for more supplemental support with coursework, especially with the shift to online classrooms. A survey conducted by DBDLI to ask parents and learners was needed post-COVID-19 confirms this.

By training individuals of African descent to deliver quality, and culturally relevant support, coaching and tutoring, ANS students will be better equipped to take on the next school year, with advanced skills in at-home learning in 2020-2021.

This opportunity is available to any Black IB or Post secondary students looking to give back. Training will take place in late September – early October. All interested participants will need to go through a screening assessment in the areas of math, science and literacy prior to their acceptance into the program. All accepted participants will need to consent to a mandatory criminal record check, as well as, a vulnerable sector check. Expenses of the criminal record check will be covered by the DBDLI. Further, all accepted participants will receive an Academic Coach Certificate and $150.00 stipend for their successful completion in the program and paid opportunities with Regional Centres for Education will potentially follow.
