Starting from Experience: Africentric Recognition for Prior Learning (ARPL)
The “Starting from Experience” project, embodying an Africentric Approach, displayed the tangible assets and process approaches which exist in African Nova Scotian community, contextualized resiliency practices and centred community voices through a research based process. This work recognize lived experience and addressed issues with strengths as the starting point.
Supporting adult learners of African descent in reframing and reassessing experiences are integral to shaping and evolving identity and longer-term success in labour force attachment and future outcomes in the life journey.
The intention of the Africentric Recognition of Prior Learning Framework is to serve as a tool that respects, reflects and centres the experiences of Persons of African descent to recognizing their skills and competencies arising from their distinct lived experiences. This framework was co-created between Delmore Buddy Daye Learning Institute (DBDLI) and community partners.
The project seeks to leverage Recognition for Prior Learning practice to address labour market needs of adult learners of African descent. Culturally-responsive learning pathways may not necessarily fast-track adult learners to employment but will certainly increase the likelihood of job maintenance and secure labour force attachment.
